WHY OFF-GRID AND WHY NOW

The Poles and Wires Are the Most Expensive Part of a Rural Power Bill

Ergon Energy runs roughly 65,000 kilometres of Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) line across regional Queensland, one of the largest SWER networks in the world. It supplies about 4% of Ergon's customers while making up around 40% of the network, and most of it was built in the 1970s and 1980s.

That maintenance bill gets spread across every connection on the fringe of the grid. Ergon Energy has been installing network-owned stand-alone power systems at some fringe-of-grid sites instead of rebuilding long lines, because it is often cheaper to generate the power where it is used than to keep patrolling a line to reach it.

If your property sits at the end of a long SWER run, you are already paying for infrastructure that rarely gives you full reliability. We design the system that replaces it, built to AS/NZS 4509 and AS/NZS 5139, and hand you the Certificate of Testing and Compliance that proves it.

OUR SERVICES

11 Services Under One Licence

Most of our work is off-grid power, but the same licence covers everything else on the property. That is why farms and commercial sites keep calling us for the rest of the electrical work too.

WHO YOU DEAL WITH

Boden Snell Has Been an Electrician for Sixteen Years. Off-Grid Became the Specialty.

From domestic and commercial work to industrial machinery, air conditioning, data and solar, Boden has covered the full spread of electrical trade work. As power prices climbed, farms and commercial clients started asking for a real way to cut the grid connection loose.

Handy Hands Electrical Pty Ltd was set up to do exactly that: off-grid systems built to standard, with the compliance paperwork done properly. You always speak with the person doing the work, not a call centre.

“The best hands in the business.”

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your daily energy use and how many days of autonomy you want, so we do not quote a figure before we have been to site. The two things that move the price most are your peak load and battery capacity, and both can come down once we know which jobs can shift to daylight hours. Every quote we issue is fixed and itemised.
Yes, provided it is sized against real measured loads rather than a rule of thumb. Pumps, irrigation, dairies, cool rooms and workshop machinery all have start-up surges that a residential-scale design will not handle. We measure what your equipment actually draws and design the inverter and battery around it, with generator backup where the load profile calls for it.
Both are valid and it comes down to your site. A full disconnection removes the supply charge entirely, which is the biggest fixed cost for most fringe-of-grid properties. A hybrid system keeps the connection as a backstop and cuts consumption instead. We model both against your last twelve months of bills and tell you which one pays for itself faster.
Yes. Island and remote site work is a big part of what we do, including years of work on Moreton Island and a lot on Daydream Island. Barge logistics, materials scheduling and remote freight all get built into the quote before we leave the mainland.
Handy Hands Electrical Pty Ltd holds QLD Electrical Contractor Licence 1503588, and every installation is handed over with the Certificate of Testing and Compliance the work requires. Off-grid systems carry documentation obligations that get missed by installers who do not do them often. We do not leave a site without the paperwork complete.
